Home delivery at my sophisticated new building
Here's a photo of the oh so modern delivery basket available to all neighbours at my new building in Zamalek.
You pull the rope and insert some money in the basket, letting it go down the stairs until it reaches the hands of the doorman who will bring what you request (by yelling at him through the ceiling or by mobile, if you're really, really posh and polite!.
He brings you your groceries or whatever you requested and you pull the basket back to your house through the stairs.
On the way back/down, the basket will carry the famous egyptian institution: the BAKSHEESH (tip).
In Egypt, tradition and old customs are still here to stay. There's a really nice side to it, I must admit.
