Cairo, the 8th March, 2011
New land, new challenges and surprising turns of events!
No one expected the Egyptian Revolution but we all understand the fair reason for it and what we expected from it.
Everything is still very fresh and egyptians are, indeed, able to congratulate themselves for their victory for FREEDOM to choose who they wish to see ruling their country.
Living for five years between egyptians, working with them and for them inside the country s system , I too noticed all the difficulties protesters complain about. The extreme and generalized corruption, the poverty and "friendly connections" that are worth more than merit and skills, the lack of freedom of speech and so... yet, no one could also preview the hard times the Revolution would impose on the country s economy and many of its inhabitants.
Besides the protesters related to the Revolution, who still gather here and there, now we watch a sad event taking place in the streets of Cairo, one that has nothing to do with FREEDOM or all the JUSTICE this country deserves: Muslims against Christians.
Why? Shouldn t all the egyptians be together in pursue of the same goals for the sake of this wonderful country? Why separation between people through religious points of views? Don t they know that UNITY it s the strenght of a PEOPLE and that struggles and separations between them just makes them weak?!
A coptic church was set on fire in Helwan, in the outskirts of Cairo.
The news report that this attack arrived in the sequence of a family fight against the wedding between a muslim girl and a christian boy. Families were against it and tempers were out of control. There were mortal victims between the families and it seems that someone from the muslim family set the church on fire.
From this episode, an whole new movement seems to be born. Of course there are past events of conflictuous nature between copts and muslims but not the kind of manifestations we saw yesterday night near from the egyptian national television building.
This should be a time of PEACE and UNITY between all sectors of egyptian society. Not a time to instill hate between religions. We are ALL ONE and the faith each person profess doesn t make him/her better or worse than anyone else.
Besides that, this is also a time to UNITE and work to rebuild EGYPT from a brand new ground that can bring prosperity to everyone. Not a time to kill each other and burn churches or mosques.
Life around here has become fascinating, as always, but also worrying in so many ways.
I only wish that the courage and incredible civility that took over egyptian people and enabled them to make an incredible Revolution praised all over the world as an example of the POSITIVE POWER of individuals in the path of their countries will remain, in these next chapters, in egyptian people s minds.
We all wish the same, regardless of our faith or nationality. We also agree on the LOVE for Egypt and the will to see it growing into the wonderful country it can be.
May God, through all the possible ways and religions, instill LIGHT and SAGENESS into egyptian s minds and may this country have the loving, fair, prosperous future it always craved for!
It s time to BUILD, not destroy.
